The Author of Love

Wasn’t it hard to not think about love when you were bombarded with red and pink hearts – on anything from M&Ms to balloons? Whether your favorite part of Valentine’s was a romantic dinner or the day-after-chocolate-sales, there is something about last week that caused us to ponder the concept of love. So as we pack up our cute, crimson Valentine’s decorations, let’s remember to exemplify Biblical love that will carry on past this season of red and pink decor. Lasting love is only found in the crimson cross. As I desire to love those around me, I am grateful that Scripture teaches us how to love in tangible ways.

Do you feel more loved by a humble person or a puffed-up person? Pride puts a wedge between relationships; humility weaves hearts together. Resisting selfishness, interacting respectfully, and holding others in high esteem, is how we love our neighbors with refreshing humility. Taking time to inquire and value the interests of others instead of taking the spotlight, is how we meekly nurture our relationships (Romans 12:10). Humility opens the door for sharing the hope we found in Jesus. This is perhaps one of the most significant ways we can love. Whether we introduce someone to Jesus or encourage a fellow believer with Biblical hope, speaking the Gospel is a powerful, God-honoring way to love (Romans 5:5).

Recently in my Quiet Time, I read Acts 2 and was inspired and convicted by how eager the early church was to lend a hand. They helped anyone in need and were joyfully generous! God has given each of us unique gifts, abilities, and resources to help further His Kingdom. Let’s make a habit of sharing all we have for the betterment of those around us because of our love for them (1 Peter 4:10).

As we finish our heart-shaped chocolates, may we be reminded that the work God has for us has not finished. Let us with gladness draw near to the Author of love, as we continually learn how to love our neighbors best.

For me, that was no exaggeration. It really was.  The new year meant the reminder of grief and experiencing new grief.…
