Imagine this. The sun has yet to come up, you position yourself on your favorite spot in the living room, the pillows are properly supporting your back. A warm cup of coffee is in your hand and your Study Bible is on your lap. Quiet Time invigorates you, and you have ample time for it as you slowly gaze towards the rising sun…
Don’t worry…my mornings don’t start that way either. When we find our Quiet Times so far unmatched with the picture above, a level of discouragement can settle in if we don’t guard against it. Many people – myself included – have gone through seasons when Quiet Time feels more like a drudgery than a delight. Why is this? What can be done about it?
Waking up at 5AM does not work for me. There was a long season where I was balancing multiple part-time jobs and the hours in my day were consumed with To-Do Lists from various people, not to mention my own To-Do’s at hand. Time became the enemy of my Quit Time, and my heart began viewing this gift as another task.
Then I remembered this quote from Martin Luther, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Instead of making me feel more guilty, I found this quote to be so inspiring. That is where my heart is…I want to spend ample time with the Lord. Any amount of time we spend with Him prepares us for an eternity of worshiping Him!
Assessing the cause of the drugergy can be very helpful and freeing. I am thankful that a solution is coming near for my work/life balance. Remember in your drudgery that God cares much more about our hearts and relationship with Him than what time of day our Quiet Time takes place, or how many chapters of Scripture we read. Remember that those are the tools, and ask God to help your drudgery become a delight!
